Black Balsam - Riga, Latvia

The snow was falling heavily as I made my way from the old town in Riga, Latvia to my hotel, the Radisson Blu Ridzene on Reimersa avenue around the corner from the U.S. Embassy. When I reached the lobby I was half frozen. Instead of heading straight to my room I decided to stop at the bar for a drink to warm me up from the inside. I already knew I wanted to try a drink with Black Balsam, the national drink.

Black Basalm is an herb infused liqueur with a 45 percent pure vodka base. The bartender recommended I drink it warmed and mixed with black currant juice. The smell of the herbs and the juice were the perfect combination.

I brought a bottle of Black Basalm back to the United States with me. I discovered that it really does go best warmed with black currant juice to cut the taste of the herbs and the vodka.
